Ledger Migration Support: Restore & Shield Your ZEC

The latest Zashi update resolves one of the biggest frustrations for Zcash users—stuck funds on Ledger. If you’ve been unable to access your ZEC due to Ledger’s ongoing Zcash integration issues, this update provides a reliable way to recover and shield your funds. It also makes it possible to restore other wallets with transparent address rotation.

Recover Your Funds from Ledger

Some Ledger users have encountered difficulties accessing their ZEC due to various issues including the recent bug in Ledger’s support for some Zcash transactions. The new Zashi update offers two simple and secure ways to recover your funds:

Restore your Ledger seed phrase in a Keystone hardware wallet – This allows you to maintain your funds in a hardware wallet while accessing, shielding, and managing them via Zashi.

  1. Import your Ledger seed phrase into Keystone to access your ZEC through Keystone.
  2. Connect your Keystone device to Zashi using Zashi Integrations.
  3. Shield your transparent ZEC by navigating to “Balances” tab and clicking on “Shield and consolidate funds.”

If you don’t have a Keystone device yet, you can get 5% off with code “Zashi.”

Restore your Ledger seed phrase directly in Zashi – This provides immediate access to your funds for management in your Zashi mobile wallet. However, since this moves funds from a hardware wallet to a software wallet, consider whether this approach aligns with your security preferences.

  1. Import your Ledger seed phrase into Zashi.
  2. Shield your transparent ZEC by navigating to “Balances” tab and clicking on “Shield and consolidate funds.”

Expanded Transparent Wallet Restoration

This update also expands Zashi’s restoration capabilities beyond Ledger. Now, users can restore wallets that use Bitcoin-style transparent address rotation and transparent-only wallets like Trust Wallet.

A Path to Better Transparent Address Rotation

While this update makes it possible to restore wallets that use transparent address rotation, for now Zashi does not offer this feature—and for good reason.

Transparent address rotation is often seen as a privacy feature, but in reality, it can create a false sense of security. We are researching ways to integrate this functionality in a way that aligns with Zcash’s privacy-first principles. In the meantime, users should be aware that transparent address rotation alone does not provide strong privacy guarantees. Read more about it here.

Why This Matters

This update not only rescues stuck ZEC from Ledger but also lays the groundwork for better recovery options and stronger privacy protections in Zashi. Whatever issues you’ve faced with ZEC storage in Ledger, this update provides a clear path to regaining control over your ZEC. Take control of your funds. Download the latest Zashi update:
